19.11.2014 RLL Container Report - 19 November 2014
In the first ten months of the year, overall container traffic through Russian ports was down slightly by 0.6% to 4.42 million teu. However, the volume of laden export containers continues to reflect strong growth with a rise of over 20 percent to 764,800 teu. As a result, the number of empty export containers dropped by 9.5% to 1.15 million. We need to monitor the figures during the next quarter to see if this is simply a temporary blip, or if Russian industry is moving over from conventional rail wagons to containers in order to respond to the change in the country’s export patterns.

Shipowners appear to be spending too much time in McDonald’s, as they are all clamouring to “super-size” their new-building programmes. The economic arguments in favour are rather persuasive: in addition to an extra 5,000 teu per sailing, the average unit cost is 26% lower and fuel consumption is over a third less per teu. Orders have been placed at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering for three container vessels each with a capacity of 19,200 teu. Both Lloyds List and Dynamar believe that the USD 155.5 million order has been placed by China’s Minsheng Financial Leasing on behalf of Mediterranean Shipping Company. If correct, this order takes the container industry one step closer to its next major milestone, the 20,000-plus era. United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has 17 container ships, including six 18,000-teu vessels, on order for delivery between 2014 and 2016. The first of the UASC vessels will be delivered this month. At the same time, UASC’s partners, China Shipping Container Lines have placed a separate order for five 18,000 teu vessels.

05.11.2014 RLL Container Report - 05 November 2014
In the first nine months of the year, the world’s largest container producer, CIMC increased box sales by 23% compared with the same period last year. This took CIMC’s production of boxes to over one million units. At the same time, sales of refrigerated containers increased by 29% to record 96,000 teu. The second largest box manufacturer, Singamas posted a 17.6% rise in box production to just under 300,000 teu. Drewry Maritime Equity Research forecasts that box production will rise by 11% in 2014 as more ultra-large container vessels enter service. Fifty-three of the jumbo vessels with a capacity of 13,000 teu or more will be added to the global fleet next year with another 43 to follow in 2016.

29.10.2014 RLL Container Report - 29 October 2014
Car sales provide a rough and ready indication of the economic health and vitality of a nation. In the first half of the year, China maintained its leading position with total sales of 9.6 million, which represent a rise of 11.2% over the same period in 2013. The USA came second with 3.8 million, while Japan occupied third place with total sales of 2.5 million vehicles. However, US sales just about matched those of 2013, while Japan recorded a healthy 11% increase on the previous year. Russia came eighth in this year’s ratings with 1.1 million vehicles, a fall of 6.2% on the 2012 total. The EU’s leading market, Germany managed a modest 2.4% rise in sales, which mirrors the general market trend in mainland Europe. There are concerns that some of the large European economies may stall and this generally negative outlook is depressing sales of “big ticket” items such as cars. Since January, the Rouble has depreciated 20 percent against most western currencies, including the Euro. Russian importers and ultimately consumers now face paying considerably more for a broad range of imported goods. At the same time, neither the EU nor Russia is helped by the imposition of trade sanctions and embargoes. When the one coughs, the other invariably sneezes.

15.10.2014 RLL Container Report - 15 October 2014
Attention in the Russian container industry is currently focused on domestic terminals. TransContainer is reported to be in discussion with Globalports regarding the purchase of the latter’s Logistika Terminal located at the Shushary complex to the south of St Petersburg. Globalports acquired Logistika Terminal in 2013, when it purchased National Container Company.
