08.10.2014 RLL Container Report - 08 October 2014
A continuous flow of data points to a significant shift in the centre of intermodal gravity towards Asia. By 2017, Transport Intelligence reckons that the Asia Pacific region will account for 33% of the global contract logistics market. Much of the growth in forwarding and logistics markets will be driven by the USD 14 Billion expansion of the Chinese contract logistics market over the next three years. This will represent more than half of the region’s total growth over the period. While China remains the core driver of growth, low-cost manufacturing is exiting China and is relocating to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and to what are termed the ‘frontier markets’ of Myanmar and Bangladesh. This shift in manufacturing has resulted in changes in supply chain requirements. To meet these challenges, major logistics companies are expanding their presence in Asia-Pacific via acquisition or organic growth.

The website fishnews.ru came up with the story of the week, as it investigated the delays in distributing the fish catch from Russian Far East ports to Siberia and Western Russia. With sanctions blocking the import of Norwegian salmon, the Russian government is expecting the Far East ports to make up the shortfall. There is certainly no shortage of fish. In the first eight months of this year, the total catch amounted to 1.4 million tons, much of which could replace imports from other countries, including Norway.

The two leading global container ports continue to increase their throughput at a steady pace. In August, Shanghai processed an additional 5.4% to record 3.11 million teu for the month. Following closely behind its Chinese rival, Singapore handled 2.87 million teu, which represents an increase of 1.8% on last August’s total. This steady and inexorable rise in container traffic is forcing European ports to upgrade their terminal facilities to cope with the ever-increasing number of boxes heading West from China and S E Asia. At the same time, shipping lines are looking for modern ports that can offer fast turn-around times and quick access to the markets at the heart of Europe. For this reason, ship owners are focussing their attention on the Adriatic Sea, which penetrates deep into the European continent, providing the shortest maritime route from the Far East via the Suez Canal to the prime European markets. Large commercial and industrial hubs like Vienna, Munich and Milan are located a short journey from container ports that form an arc stretching round the Northern Adriatic from Ravenna in Italy to Rijeka in Croatia.

DB Logistik has just inaugurated a new container service from Hamburg to Zhengzhou in the Chinese province of Henan. The 41 container special block train is scheduled to take 17 days to cover the 10,214 km from the Hansestadt to the Middle Kingdon. The German lyricist, Udo Lindenberg had been content to send his `Sonderzug‘ only as far as Pankow to visit the General Secretary of the DDR Communist Party but German Railways have decided to go one step further and are despatching a full container train to the ‘Genossen‘ in the Central Committee in China. The communique from DB goes on to advise that the train will complete the journey in 17 days. Or, to be precise, the communique reads ´in rund 17 Tagen und ist damit über 20 Tage schneller am Ziel als das Schiff‘ ( i.e. `in about 17 days.´).

As reports indicate a steady rise in box traffic, analysts are predicting that port traffic could, in the coming years, experience a further dramatic increase. In July, container volumes on the key Asia to Europe trade rose by more than 7.3% to register 1.4 million teu. If this growth can be sustained, we could see 840 million teu passing through global ports by 2018. That figure would be double the box traffic registered only a decade ago in 2004. By 2013, box volumes had risen to 642 million and if projections are correct, a further 32 million will be added this year alone.
