24.12.2014 RLL Container Report - 24 December 2014
Even at this early stage, it is already clear that there will be major changes in the number and type of containers transported in Russia. First, the devaluation of the Rouble will reduce the volume of import containers. Second, prolonged sanctions will further reduce the number of 40’ HiCube import containers from the European Union and N America. Third, it is likely that the volume of traditional Russian exports will increase, resulting in a rise in the volume of 20’ containers. Fourth, more export container traffic will move on the Transiberian routes via the Far Eastern ports and from there on to the main ports in South East Asia.

17.12.2014 RLL Container Report - 17 December 2014
On Tuesday the 9th of December, a mere twenty-one days after departing Zhejiang Province, the train transporting 30 x 40’ HC of Chinese goods from Yiwu arrived at its destination in Madrid. Assuming a distance of 13,000 km, this equates to an average speed of 25.8 km per hour. In the same week, a block train from Vostochny arrived in Moscow just six days after departing the Far Eastern port. Assuming a distance of 9,289 kms, the average speed works out at 64.5 km. Normally, the same journey takes seven days, which equates to an average of 55.3 km per hour. The Maersk E-class vessels with their capacity of 18,000 teu glide across the seven seas at a cruising speed of 19 knots (35km/h). During its historic journey, the Chinese train had to change gauge first at Dostyk, secondly at Brest and then for a third time at Irun on the Franco-Spanish border. On the return leg, the 40’ HC dry cargo units will transport Spanish ham, Rioja wine and olive oil back to Yiwi.

10.12.2014 RLL Container Report - 10 December 2014
There has been much talk of trial shipments of block trains from provincial Chinese cities via Dostyk and on to Europe. In June of last year, the US news channel, CNN filmed the departure of the first “block train” from Chongqing and its arrival in Dostyk. Rather than a sleek and efficient intermodal service, the CNN film clearly shows the 40’ HC containers being loaded into conventional rail wagons normally used for the transport of coal or other bulk cargoes. Several days, and 3,500 km later, the same CNN film crew was on hand to film the arrival of the block train, carrying thousands of personal computers, at the border crossing station of Dostyk – still loaded on conventional rail wagons. It is only when the train moved into Kazakhstan that the containers were loaded and properly secured with twist-locks on to container platforms for the next leg of their journey to Poland. The film report must have caused a great deal of consternation when viewed by the executives of the computer company and the operator promoting the service.

These lines from the march,”British Grenadiers” were introduced to Britain during the reign of the Dutch Stadholder, King William III. Now, Hector Rail and the Dutch Van Dieren Multimodal plan to introduce additional services to their current 11 intermodal trips from Duisburg to Nässjö and Katrineholm in Central Sweden. Soon, we may also be singing the praises of Chinese Railway. In co-operation with Deutsche Bahn, Chinese Railway has dispatched a block train with 30 x 40’ HC containers carrying exports from the Chinese city of Yiwu in the Province of Zhejiang to Europe. The containers are marked with the TBJU prefix, which is the official BIC code for China Railway Container Transport and the export cargo is destined for the Spanish capital of Madrid almost 13,000 km to the West. The transit time is reckoned at 21 days, which would make it both the longest rail container service in the world and the fastest transit time for a block container train between China and Spain.

26.11.2014 RLL Container Report - 26 November 2014
On the 3rd of December, a major new north-south rail link will be inaugurated when the presidents of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran open a new railway that will form a vital trade link from Europe down to the Persian Gulf. The railway stretches 900 km and will cut the distance between Russia and Central Asia to the Persian Gulf ports by 600 km. This new line to the Gulf comes at a time when seaborne container traffic within the Middle East and the Indian Sub-continent grew by 16.4% to 559,000 teu. Not to be outdone in this building fervour, Kazakhstan’s neighbour, Uzbekistan is to invest USD 1.9 Billion in a new 129-km rail line to link up the eastern provinces of the country, Andijan, Namangan and Ferghana, which are surrounded on three sides by their neighbours, Kirgizstan and Tajikistan.
