11.02.2015 RLL Container Report - 11 February 2015
On January 21st, the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with his Serbian counterpart, Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. They celebrated their ambitious plan to upgrade the rail line from Serbia via Macedonia and down to the Greek port of Thessaloniki. When completed, it would provide a high-speed line that would carry Chinese products via Piraeus all the way to the heart of Europe. Three days later, the delegates departed Davos and headed back to their respective capitals to issue instructions to set this important project in motion.

The songwriter, Ian Tyson neatly summed up the geography and climate of his native Canada in the opening line of his song, “Four strong winds”. Now, Canadian farmers are taking heed of Mr Tyson’s text and are using containers to protect their grain harvest from all that Nature can throw at it. In so doing, the Canadians are about to revolutionise global container transport.

It reads like a sailing schedule from a Joseph Conrad novel: Vladivostok, Shanghai, Ningbo, Singapore, Port Klang, Yangon, Port Klang, Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, Kuantan, Sihanoukville, Ho Chi Minh, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan and back to Vladivostok. This is, in fact, the schedule for a new container service from the Russian Far East to Myanmar (Burma). It is a 10,500-mile long joint service operated by Maersk and China Shipping Container Lines employing eight 1,100-teu vessels. The Vladivostok call also allows all eight vessels to take advantage of Russia’s lower bunker prices, giving the partners an important competitive edge.

Not even Lennon and McCartney could have conjured up a more magical mystery tour for the “Marstal Maersk” on its maiden voyage. After fuelling at Vostochy, it proceeded to Rotterdam for its final tests. From there, the head office in Copenhagen is directing the 18,300-teu majesty of the seas to set course for the container terminal in Tangiers. The Moroccan port lies at the northern tip of the African continent on the southern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, opposite its sister box terminal in Algeciras. Last year, the Moroccan port handled a record 3 million teu, which represents a 20 percent increase on the previous year. Marstal must be the first ever container vessel to include on its maiden Vostochny, by the Sea of Japan and Tangiers in the Maghreb.

14.01.2015 RLL Container Report - 14 January 2015
As we in the north celebrated the usual chilly beginning to the New Year, Brent Crude Oil dropped to under USD 50 per barrel, which is half the price quoted at the beginning of September 2014. This will have a beneficial impact on the fortunes of shipowners, who are currently taking delivery of large, new container vessels costing in the region of USD 200 million each. Bunker fuel costs account for approximately 70% of the total voyage expenditure for a large container vessel and ship operators naturally prefer purchasing bunker fuel from ports where the cost is lower.
