18.03.2015 RLL Container Report - 18 March 2015
The barrier has at last been broken. MITSUI OSK Lines will be the first line to take delivery of 20,000 teu vessels after it signed a USD 619 million order with Samsung Heavy Industries for six 20,150 teu containerships. At the same time, Maersk is about to place an order for additional containerships. Speculation is rife that the Danes might opt for larger vessels with a capacity of up to 25,000 teu but the head of Maersk, Soren Skou seemed to go out of his way to scotch these rumours.

11.03.2015 RLL Container Report - 11 March 2015
As we move into March, up here in these northern latitudes the sun rises earlier and sets later by several minutes each day. There are fewer snow showers, as precipitation turns from snow to sleet and then increasingly to rain. The mercury creeps up above zero and we can cast off yet another layer of clothing. Soon, we can change from winter to summer tyres and dream about heading south, “where the weather suits my clothes”. Looking at a map of Europe, I weighed up the options, which were: Athens, the Straits of Messina at the toe of Italy and Algeciras at the Straits of Gibraltar with a view across to Morocco.

The European Union has tasked itself with establishing a network of high-speed rail lines that will form corridors linking the continent from north to south and east to west. This is a massive undertaking, which may make or break the Union.

25.02.2015 RLL Container Report - 25 February 2015
The two traditionally “quiet men” of the European Union are beginning to find their voice. Finland and Estonia share a common Uralic root in their languages and they now share a common cause – the construction of a tunnel linking Helsinki with Tallinn. The cost of linking up the two capitals at either side of the Gulf of Finland is estimated at Euro 9 or possibly 13 Billion. As with all such major engineering projects, the final bill will bear little resemblance to these “back-of-an-envelope” estimates, conjured up out of thin air. The proposed rail tunnel will link into another major project, Rail Baltica, which will provide a high-speed line linking the three Baltic states with Warsaw and then on to Berlin.

18.02.2015 RLL Container Report - 18 February 2015
This week’s big news comes from the Port of Rotterdam, where work commenced on a new quay dedicated to empty containers. At 165 metres in length and with an initial depth of seven metres, the new quay in John Frisohaven will be operational by September. In order to reduce the number of trucking moves in N W Europe, it is planned that 40 percent of empty container moves will be made by inland barge. Rotterdam’s North Sea rival, Hamburg saw annual throughput at its container terminals on the Elbe rise by 5.1% to 9.7 million teu. Although traffic to Russia was down, HHLA’s inland European box terminals raised throughput by 9.4% to 1.3 million teu, aided by increased imports from China.
