03.09.2014 RLL Container Report - 03 September 2014
As Maersk takes delivery of its eleventh 18,270-teu vessel, Merete Maersk, so its partner, Mediterranean Shipping Company, is negotiating a long-term charter for five Triple E container vessels. MSC plans to include these new 18,000 teu ships in the 2M alliance with the Danes. Costing some USD 150 million, a Triple E vessel does not come cheap but the these giant vessels should save the lines billions of dollars in operating costs thanks, in part, to their fuel-efficient engines. The Merete Maersk follows the Mayview Maersk, delivered in July. The 12th unit in the series, Mogens Maersk, is scheduled for delivery in mid-September, after which the main Asia-Europe service will deploy a full fleet of 18,270 TEU ships. Next year, Maersk will take delivery of a further eight Triple E class ships.

Currently, shipping lines are busy returning many containers laden with agricultural products destined for Russian ports. Ironically, the same shipping companies stand to benefit, as Russia looks further afield to South America, Turkey, North Africa and Asia to help restock its supermarket shelves. At the latest count, European agricultural exports to Russia were worth Euro 11 billion a year, some 10 percent of all EU agricultural sales. The European Union plans to redirect much of the fruit exports bound for Russia to schools throughout Western Europe. Fish and meat products can simply be channelled through normal commercial outlets such as supermarkets. Less than one percent of US agricultural exports go to Russia and the trade included re-stocking Russian farms with herds of Aberdeen Angus cattle to improve meat quality. Norway should have little problem in finding willing buyers for its salmon exports. The same trucks and vessels that carried agricultural products to Russia can simply do an about-face and deliver these products to a very large and highly developed market in Western Europe. Any surplus will find its way to export markets.

In the space of two short weeks, the transport sector in Russia and Europe has been turned upside down, as Russia and the West each imposed trade embargoes on various classes of products. For its part, Russia stopped the import from Europe and North America of a large number of products ranging from fruit and vegetables to fish. It is now up to the transport sector on both sides of the political divide to sort out the logistical mess caused by the politicians.

30.07.2014 RLL Container Report - 30 July 2014
The Summa Group has announced more details of its plans to develop the port of Zarubino in the Primorye region. In the initial phase of development, three Chinese partners are offering cargo flows of up to 17 million tons per annum, which would require the construction of specialised facilities to handle grain, bulk fertilisers, general cargo plus a separate container terminal. More than half the initial cargo flows of some 10 million tons, would be in the form of grain. However, the Chinese are also indicating a flow of up to 5 million tons of water, though it is not clear how much would be shipped in bulk and how much would be bottled. The volume of water passing through Zarubino is projected to grow to 40 million tons per annum by 2025. In addition, the Chinese side is talking of one million cars per annum plus 40,000 teu through Zarubino.

Currently, Moscow rail terminals handle 84.3 million tons per annum but forecasts indicate this figure is likely to reach 115.1 million tons by 2020. At the same time, RZD is preparing to close many freight terminals within the Moscow Ring Road, resulting in a flight from the cramped city-centre facilities to large, modern terminals in the outer regions, where there is space for future expansion.
