02.11.2016 RLL Container Report - 02 November 2016
The second in the trio of new rail lines being built by the Chinese in East Africa will link the port of Mombasa with the Kenyan capital at Nairobi, a journey of some 600 kilometres. As with the line from Djibouti to Addis Ababa, this will be uphill journey all the way: Nairobi sits some 1,700 metres above sea level, a fact that has made it difficult to increase cargo distribution by road. The line has been designed with an axle load of 25 tonnes and could transport, 22 million tonnes per year at a speed of 80-100km/h for freight trains and 120km/h for passenger trains. Each of the freight trains will have a haulage capacity of 4,000 tonnes, or 216 TEUs, and can accommodate double-stack containers.

26.10.2016 RLL Container Report - 26 October 2016
On the fifth of October, the bands were out in Addis Ababa, as the Ethiopian capital inaugurated the first of three highly important railway lines under construction by the Chinese in East Africa. The other two, in Kenya and Tanzania will follow on shortly. The three lines will radically alter the face of rail transport on the continent and at the same time will revolutionise global intermodal transport. If you had ever wondered “what is the point of all those ultra-large container carriers”, then rail intermodal transport in Africa will soon provide part of the answer.

Government officials met with representatives of Hungarian Railways (MAV) and their Chinese partners to discuss the Euro 1.77 Billion upgrade to the rail line linking the Hungarian capital with Belgrade in Serbia. This section of the line is of great importance for the Hungarian economy, as it eventually links up with the Port of Koper to the west in Slovenia, which is currently Hungary’s main transit corridor for cargo to and from China and the Far East. The port plans to raise annual throughput from its current level of 930,000 to 1.3 million by 2020. Currently, Budapest acts as the main distribution point in Central Europe for containerised cargoes arriving by sea from Asian ports.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Russia now leads its North America rivals in the volume of grain exports, with 35 million tons shipped in 2016. This is 3.5 million more than the USA, and exceeds by 2 million tons Canadian exports. One of the companies to benefit from the surge in popularity of Russian grain exports is RusAgro. RusAgro is Russia’ largest vertically-integrated agricultural business group and a leading producer of sugar, pork, margarine and mayonnaise. In 2015, the company harvested over two and a half million tonnes of sugar beet and almost seven million tonnes of grain.

The major container lessors have often complained about the difficulty of finding in Russia financially strong lessees, with whom they can conclude large, long-term lease contracts. Currently, Sibur Gas employs 1,500 of its own tank containers to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Sibur is to invest USD 70 million in acquitting additional gas tank containers and the necessary depot infrastructure to inspect, maintain and repair these sophisticated units.
