17.08.2016 RLL Container Report - 17 August 2016
Official figures recorded a drop in container activity at Russian ports for the first six months of this year. In total, Russian ports handled 1.96 million teu, which represents a fall of 1.3%. Although a very rough and ready guide, container statistics are often used as a barometer of a nation’s economic health. The fact that a large number of these containers are moving empty is generally ignored.

The ripple effect of the introduction of 18,000 teu vessels is being felt in the North West Pacific, where the Port of Prince Rupert is busily expanding its Fairview Container Terminal. The work is due to be completed by the third quarter of 2017 and when opened, it will raise the Canadian port’s box capacity by almost 50% to 1.3 million teu. Just south of the border, the Northwest Seaport Alliance, consisting of the ports of Tacoma and Seattle, are modernising their facilities to cope with the new generation of boxships. Tacoma’s Husky terminal will soon be able to receive 18,000 teu ships. At the same time and just to the north, Terminal 5 at Seattle is to be upgraded to allow two of these giant box carriers to call simultaneously.

03.08.2016 RLL Container Report - 03 August 2016
No sooner had the upgraded Panama and Suez canals re-opened, than ship designers were drawing up radical plans to construct ever larger containerships that will be too big to transit either of these important waterways. Plans on the drawing board call for box ships of up to 26,000 teu. It will be recalled that less than ten years ago the Emma Maersk with a total of 14,000 teu took to the water. Now, a decade later, the container shipping industry has completely re-thought the role of the giant box carriers in the global transport system. The conclusion is that there is still a large amount of containerisable cargo that can be transported to ever more destinations. The problem is that there are currently no ports that can accommodate the 26,000 teu behemoths being proposed by the boffins.

Two Korean transport companies are out to disprove the notion that the Northern Sea Route via the Arctic Sea has little commercial or logistic value. Pan Ocean and SLK Kukbo have been tasked with delivering equipment to two separate liquefied gas plants in Sabetta and Pavlodar. The former is a port located on the Yamal Peninsula not far from the point where the River Ob enters the Arctic Sea. Located at a latitude of 72 degrees, the weather conditions are very challenging with strong winds, frequent rough weather and exceedingly low temperatures. Pavlodar, on the other hand, is a city located at 52 degrees latitude in northern Kazakhstan, a short distance from the Russian border. What links these two distant locations is the river Irtysh, which has its origins in the Mongolian Altai Mountains in Xinjiang, China, from where it flows past Pavlodar. Then, after a total of 4,248 kilometres, the Irtysh merges with the River Ob, as it flows past Sabetta on its way to the Arctic Sea.

Brazil is the world’s largest producer of coffee, orange juice and sugar, and the second largest producer of soya beans. Altogether, Brazil possess some 329 million hectares of arable land, of which 80 million (24.3%) are allocated to annual and perennial crops, while just over half the land is used for pastures. The country is blessed with diverse climatic conditions, regular rainfall, abundant solar energy and nearly 13% of all fresh water on the planet. Little wonder that agribusiness is one of the main drivers of the Brazilian economy.
