Carriers are earning less revenue as freight rates continue to resist all attempts to raise themselves from historical lows. Normally, when lower income streams become the new norm, shipping lines have to look elsewhere for a higher scale of operational efficiency. This explains the trend towards consolidation among those lines with a relatively small share of the box market. Thus, CMA CGM was quick to buy up APL&NOL, while the two Chinese lines, Cosco and CSCL opted for a merger.

In order to cope with the rise if freight and passenger traffic, the European Union has been ploughing large sums of money into improving highways right across the length and breadth of the union. From the Port of Gävle, Sweden in the North-East to the Port of Sines in Portugal down in the South West, it is a distance is 4,000 km and you can drive almost all the way on a motorway-standard highway. There is still a short stretch of single highway in southern Sweden, which has yet to be upgraded.

15.06.2016 RLL Container Report - 15 June 2016
For the second month in a row, box volumes on the key Asia-Europe route recorded a small increase. This has encouraged lines to place orders for additional box tonnage. CMA CGM has signed a deal for four 3,300 teu vessels with the Cosco-Zhoushan yard, which brings to nine the number of similar sized box carriers to be delivered from Chinese yards. Currently, CMA CGM’s order book consists of three 20,000 teu and six 14,000 teu vessels to be delivered over the next eighteen months.
