07.12.2016 RLL Container Report - 07 December 2016
By the beginning of December, Russian Railway engineers had re-laid 619 km of a total 806 km of rail track on the Island of Sakhalin. Since the end of the war, when the USSR re-united the two halves of the island, Sakhalin boasted both a broad gauge line in the north of the island and a Japanese gauge (1067 mm) line in the southern half. Interestingly, RZD intends to continue using rolling stock on the narrower gauge network for the foreseeable future.

On the 24th of October, DCT Gdansk opened its second deepwater berth. This is the largest private investment in Poland’s port sector and it confirms Gdansk as the key container port in the Baltic region. The new berth is 650 metres long and is equipped with five STS cranes capable of handling container vessels with a capacity of over 20,000 teu. At the same time, Poland's railway infrastructure manager, PKP PLK commissioned the second line on the rail bridge linking Gdansk's Outer Port. The new connection can accommodate 180 fully-laden trains per day, linking up all the major population and industrial centres in Poland and Central Europe. These improvements will double the port’s box throughput to 3 million teu per annum. More importantly, Gdansk is one of the few ice-free container ports in the Baltic Region, which is a key factor in the development of the container traffic.

During the recent US Presidential Election, the term “flyover country” was used to describe those states of the USA lying between the East and West Coasts. The term, which is often used pejoratively, refers to the vast interior regions of the country passed over by transcontinental flights between the two most populous urban agglomerations, the North-eastern Megalopolis and its counterpart in Southern California. Much to the surprise of the political pundits, voters in flyover country came out in force to secure the election of Donald Trump.

Tanzania is the third country in East Africa to commence construction of a standard gauge rail line to replace the dilapidated narrow-gauge network constructed over 100 years ago by the Germans. The country has a population of 55 million and the largest city is the port of Dar-es-Salaam with 4.3 million inhabitants. China’s Export-Import (Exim) Bank has agreed to provide Tanzania with a USD 7.6 Billion loan, which will be used to construct 2,200 km of new standard-gauge railway linking Dar-es-Salaam with cities in central and western Tanzania.

The demise of Hanjin line had the immediate effect of pushing freight rates up from a very low point, as the market went from oversupply to undersupply in a matter of days. Short term rates for a 40’ HC slot out of Far East ports to the US climbed by 47% during the third quarter, starting at US$1,240 and ending up at US$1,826. However, the critical question, which the liner industry is asking itself is: will these higher rates hold?
