The Chinese and Pakistanis have recently opened a new road corridor from Xinjiang, Western China all the way down to the port of Gwadar in the far south-west of Pakistan - a distance of some 3,500 km. As part of the inauguration ceremony, the Chinese despatched a convoy of 50 trucks, which took two weeks to complete the long and arduous journey. The corridor from Xinjiang to Gwadar is being touted as a new alternative transport and economic corridor to the traditional and much longer sea route via Shanghai and the Straits of Malacca.

With a population of 170 million, Bangladesh has grown into the eighth most populous country in the world. In spite of the spectacular rise in the number of inhabitants, Bangladesh has not built a new port since the country gained independence from Pakistan 45 years ago. In an urgent effort to catch up with the rapid changes in shipping, the Bangladesh government has contracted two Chinese companies, CHEC and CSCEC to develop a USD 600 million deep-sea port at Payra on the Bay of Bengal.

The global demand for wood pellets as a source of fuel is expected to grow from 7 million tons in 2015 to 59 million tons by 2020. The Scandinavian countries were quick to convert to wood pellets, followed by the UK and Italy. Sweden, which has large forestry resources but no oil, led the way, followed by its southern neighbour, Denmark. With 22% of world’s forestry on its territory, Russia has an abundance of biomass resources, which can satisfy the demand in western Europe for biofuel products, such as wood pellets. The forests in Russia occupy about 40 percent of the Russian landmass. Every year, large amounts of wood waste are produced by the forest industry and these can be easily converted to biomass products like wood pellets.

The opening up of markets in Iran has focused attention on the rail, road and water links to the European Union. By virtue of its location in the South Eastern Balkans, Bulgaria plays a pivotal role in EU logistics, acting as a crossroads for trade routes by sea or land from Iran via Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. Immediately to the south, Bulgaria provides Greece with a direct land corridor to the rest of the EU. Meanwhile, to the West, Bulgaria shares a border with two prospective EU members in the form of Serbia and Macedonia. In order to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world, much of the old transport infrastructure has to be completely overhauled.
