In his celebrated book “The shape of things to come”, the writer, H.G. Wells speculated on future events from 1933 until the year 2106. However, not even a writer with the insight of the eminent English novelist could have foreseen the radical changes, which are to be imposed on Chinese society over a much shorter timeframe. The Chinese government announced it is to launch a six-year plan to raise the level of the urban population from 53.7% to 60%, which equates to over 88 million citizens. This is equivalent to the combined populations of Germany and Denmark upping sticks, leaving their native villages and moving – or being moved – to an unbuilt urban settlement.

In the words of the song, “They’ve got an awful lot of coffee” – and other agricultural products – in Brazil. Last year, Brazil was blessed with a record harvest, including 80,000 tons of soybeans. Unfortunately, this abundant harvest overwhelmed the local transport system and eventually caused local exports to lose out to competitors in the USA, who were able to call on a more efficient and competitive transport network to move their agricultural products more quickly and at lower costs to overseas markets.

At the end of March, CMA-CGM followed in the footsteps of the two other P3 members by confirming the long-expected upgrade of six newbuildings to 18,000 teu. Maersk had previously ordered 20 Triple-E class vessels with a similar capacity, of which seven have already been delivered. The eighth vessel, Marstal Maersk will undergo sea trials this month and will be followed by a further five sister ships in the current calendar year. Next year, Maersk will complete the order, when they receive the final batch of seven of these queens of the sea. By 2016 the P3 group, consisting of Maersk, MSC and CMA-CGM, will be operating a fleet of 29 vessels each with a capacity of between 18,000 and 19,000 teu.

02.04.2014 RLL Container Report - 02 April 2014
Global demand for major grains, such as maize, rice and wheat, is projected to increase by nearly 48 percent from 2000-2025 and by 70 percent between 2000 and 2050. In February, prices for US wheat rose 1.3% after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecast lower than expected domestic supplies amid rising overseas demand. Export demand for U.S. grain stocks is strong due in part to reduced competition from Argentina, where wheat farmers faced drought last year. The USDA raised its export sales forecast for the 2013-14 season to 1.175 billion bushels from 1.125 billion last month. The UDSA liaises closely with its colleagues in Canada to ensure there is sufficient transport capacity, both on land and at sea, to cope with the projected rise in grain exports from North America.

The Port of Antwerp in Flanders is busily upgrading rail connections between Europe’s second largest port and its prime customer base in the region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Of the 190 million tons, which passed through the port last year, 102 million tons were transported in containers. A new tunnel, which opens in September, will offer a second rail link between the left and the right bank of the Scheldt and will increase capacity to 109 trains per day. At the same time, the line south via Aachen and Monchengladbach is being improved as part of a wider scheme to give quicker transit times on the main transport route as far as Vienna.
