In the first half of the year, Transcontainer carried a record 860,000 teu, representing an 18.7% increase over the same period last year. The figures for import cargoes caught the eye, as Transcontainer reported a 44.3% increase on inbound box moves to register a total of 151,300 teu for the first half of the year. At 439,000 teu, domestic box traffic on the broad-gauge network remains the rail operator’s core business. Overall, the Russian intermodal operator chalked up a highly commendable 8.7% increase in its box activity. This news comes as RZD, the company’s parent, reviews its options for the future of its valuable container asset. One option being discussed is a break-up of the intermodal operator into two of three separate units, which could compete with each other in a more open market environment. Via United Transport and Logistics Company (UTLK), RZD has a controlling share of the biggest intermodal operator on the broad-gauge network. With an estimated market capitalisation of over USD 700 million, prospective buyers are going to have to dig deep into their pockets.

According to China Daily, COSCO plans to acquire no less than 14 ultra-large box carriers, six of which will be capable of transporting 21,000 teu on the prime route between the Far East and Europe. The vessels will be built in Shanghai and the price tag for the ultra-large carriers with leave little change from USD 160 million. The first container carrier will come down the slipway next year and its arrival will speed up the global shift from bulk to boxships.

In the first half of this year, RZD-Partner notes, there was a rise of over 30% in forestry products moving by ISO containers. In total, 130,480 tons of containerised products were transported on the Russian rail network. This represents an increase of 31.5% over last year’s figures. Of the total moving by rail, 111,720 teu were destined for Chinese clients, a rise of 26% over 2016. Domestic shipments accounted for 13,900 teu, representing a 44% improvement on last year. Perhaps the most impressive fact was that Ilim Timber increased its share of the intermodal shipments to China by three-fold to return a total of 10,700 teu for the first half of the year. The company exports around one million tons of its products to China and it intends to play a more central role in distributing its products around the globe. If you intend to be a major player in the intermodal market, this is definitely the way to go about it.

The number of containerships of 13,000 teu or above deployed on the Asia-US West Coast trade has nearly doubled since the start of 2017. The huge investment in Ultra Large Container Vessels of 18,000 teu or more has had a dramatic effect on the trade from the Far East to Europe. Now, as the 10 to 15,000 teu vessels are reallocated to other trades, the full impact is being felt in ports around the globe. Container ports on the West Coast of the USA report a near doubling of 13,000+ teu vessels deployed on routes out of Asia rising from 21 to 36 by the end of May.
